Artist Statement
Russell Hughes is a York-based multi-disciplinary artist
working in sculpture and printmaking, recently completing an MA at Leeds Arts University.
His work is concerned with space as a product of the characteristics of society and how we exist and live our lives within it. He questions what specific spaces reveal about us and whether we remain too often unaware of and complicit in the constant reshaping and manipulation of the public and private spaces in which we live.

The artist’s practice involves creating data by physically engaging
with spaces and architecture, for example by GPS recording of movement or by
measurement of surfaces and objects.
His ideas are visualised and communicated through
transforming ready-made objects and everyday architectural materials, providing
a physical connection between the work and the space. Sculptural work is often
combined with printmaking to present different facets of our experience of
space.
Recent work explores a specific urban space through multiple
walks during various public events, responding to the disruption in access to
the space and the infrastructure of control and restriction through which we
experience the space.
